As long as people have been able to communicate with one another by networks of computers, long before the "Internet" became a household world, there were small systems called Computerized Bulletin Boards (CBBS) and commercial online service such an MicroNet, Compuserve, the Source, and related online service providers there has always been some version of an "online Tough Guy".
With the massive flood of newcomers to the Internet on the early to mid-90, the ITG (Internet Tough Guy), and their related minion-infested the darker side of the Internet. In 1997-1999 "Low Earth Orbit Ion Cannons"networks operating as a mechanism to distribute various sorts of attacks across a network of Zombie or slave machines.
Anonymous started using these tools to harass Internet Asset, to choke of communications wiring, to distribute viruses, and essentially perform acts of vandalism, and then later to go figure why they did so the mischief-maker could post bragging rights about that they did.
Anonymous is not actually a hacker group, they are poorly direct script kiddies, who lack individual competency to perform something as simple as a denial of service by backhoe attack, or even an attack with a shovel and pick.
Anonymous is little more than a group of ITG's, who act out, and seek causes behind which they can find an excuse for criminal deeds.
Now where did I leave my Guy Fawkes face mask and hat?
