Ethics Assignment #4 (Privacy, Apple, and the FBI)

I select Why Privacy is Important to discuss Apple/FBI case.

If James Rachels is still alive, I believe the author will disagree with United States government’s requirement. In the articles, Why Privacy is Important, author kept reminding us we could not leak our privacy information. At the beginning he pointed out that “Privacy is sometimes necessary to protect people‟s interests in competitive situations(Why Privacy Is Important)” .Apparently, United States government did not follow this point of view. They want to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. This plant is a good way to do investigation on criminal suspects. However, that can make people’s phone lack of security. Apple also said that “Smartphones, led by iPhone, have become an essential part of our lives. People use them to store an incredible amount of personal information, from our private conversations to our photos, our music, our notes, our calendars and contacts, our financial information and health data, even where we have been and where we are going( A Message to Our Customers)”. Apple’s point accorded with James Rachels’ idea. If one day, a man’s cell phone was hacked because he’s Iphone did no have good encryption. He may leak his important information, and his life may be ruined. At James Rachels’s ideas, “If we cannot control who has access to us, sometimes including and sometimes excluding various people, then we cannot control the patterns of behavior we need to adopt(Why Privacy Is Important)”. It explants very clear. Sometime, we have to keep some secrets for some people because these secret have risks to break your relationships. For example, you just meet a new girl friend. Accidentally, your phone was hacked by Iphone’s lacking of encryption. Then your date was spread up, so your girl friend know a lot of bad things about you. Do you think your relationship will keep it normal. James Rachels should have the same thinking today. If apple agree United States government’s requirement. I think not only apple, but also the whole word will affect. Government can keep track in your phone. It like you open a door let strangers get into your house. James Rachels valued that “our ability to control who has access to us, and who knows what about us, allows us to maintain the variety of relationships with other people that we want to have(Why Privacy Is Important)”. Our privacy is belong us, not government. Therefore, James Rachels will agree Apple today.

  1. Even though we all agree on privacy rights, there is no doubt that collective security is very important thing. San Bernardino victims and the survivors should get justice. One marketing strategy or technological glitch shouldn’t come in between justice and perpetrators. I’m not against privacy by any means but to achieve greater community and national security goal, personal privacy issues could become less of a priority for me. Government and Court should have their last say on people’s faith rather than these big business corporations and tech-giants like Apple, because government has the ultimate responsibility to protect people.
