Situation: Aaron Swartz, a genius programmer, who was fined
$1 million and up to 35 years in prison. He suicided at the age of 26 in his
apartment.
Claim: Aaron Swartz was a genius programmer, he helped
create RSS, the tool that allows users to subscribe to online information. “He
was indicted on federal charges of gaining illegal access to JSTOR, a
subscription-only service for distributing scientific and literary journal, and
downloading 4.8 million articles and documents, nearly the entire library.”
Argument: Aaron Swartz was prosecuted as cybercrime, because
he has downloaded many academic journal articles through the MIT network.
Principle: He had broken the law, but what he has done is
harmless, he didn’t share those files to anyone, so the 35 years in prison and
$1 million fine are too heavy. After all, we lost a brilliant hacker, a talent.
