Property pt.3 – A message to Sony from Anonymous

As Sony decided to take legal actions against GeoHot for what he did with the PS3, Anonymous decided to send a message to Sony. The following are some of the things I noticed about property.
“Apparently only renting your products”
Anonymous told Sony “Perhaps you should alert your customers to the fact that they are only renting your product?” According to Anonymous, when someone purchases a product by paying with their own money, the product becomes theirs. Which means they should be able to do whatever they want with it.  According to SONY, they can purchase the product, but must not do anything to change it in no way or form. If the person is not allowed to do whatever he or she wants with the product they purchased, they might as well just pay a smaller amount to rent it, instead of paying full amount to supposedly “own” it but have the same rights when it comes to what they can do with it.

“Renting” your web domains
Anonymous told Sony that they own their web domains because they paid for it with their own money. But they also told them that they have only been renting their web domains, meaning that they don’t actually own it. Just like people who purchase Sony’s products.

“We own this. Forever.”
Anonymous says “we own this. Forever”, meaning the internet. But do they really? What makes then believe they own the internet, just because they can manipulate it, it becomes their property?.

“Only sought the free distribution of information”
Anonymous told Sony “In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information.” Anonymous believes that information should always be free. In a way, I believe that Anonymous tried to justify GeoHot’s actions by telling Sony information is free, and that GeoHot was only distributing that information.
