Ethics Final Project pt 2

For my final project I chose Aristotle as a philosopher. As quoted from Socrates "The shortest and surest way to live with honor in the world, is to be in reality what we would appear to be; and if we observe, we shall find, that all human virtues increase and strengthen themselves by the practice of them" he talks about how what we are known of and what we appear is what makes us who we are in the current society. Especially in the society of media and internet, our reputation is something really important. In the case of Salina, his reputation was destroyed by the newspapers and media even if at the end of the day he was found not guilty of all his charges. What the FBI did, abusing his power in order to ruin this man's reputation, is something that cannot be reversed anymore. This man has suffered from a really bad reputation loss and now he is bound to what he is known for in society. If we read another quote from Socrates we can see that: "Regard your good name as the richest jewel you can possibly be possessed of – for credit is like fire; when once you have kindled it you may easily preserve it, but if you once extinguish it, you will find it an arduous task to rekindle it again". What Socrates is saying is that once your reputation goes down, there is almost impossible to build a different one, therefore you are basically stuck with the "ruined" one forever. http://independentspirituality.com/socrates-reputation/ http://www.sparknotes.com/philosophy/apology/section3.rhtml http://www.wired.com/2014/11/from-440-years-to-misdemeanor/
