"The first maketh men invade for Gain; the second, for safety; and the third, Reputation. The first use violence to make themselves Masters of other men's persons, wives, children, and cattle; the second, to defend them; the third, for trifles, as a word, a smile, a different opinion, and any other sign of undervalue, either direct in their Persons, or by reflexion in their kindred, their Friends, their Nation, their Profession, or their Name."
In this excerpt, Hobbes explains that men go to war to protect his country and his loved ones from harm, and to have the reputation of being undefeated. They go to war to resolve different political and religious believes. Men also go to war to invade other countries for power and land. Once a country invades another, all persons within that defended country might become enslaved, killed, or spared. That country under the power of new rule may be protected from harms way.
I agree with what Hobbes said in the excerpt. Men go to war to protect his country and loved ones from harm. People go to war when they feel that their lives, moral believes, and reputation are threatened. Sometimes men go to war within their own countries to fight for freedom from a corrupt or communist government. Men do go to war to gain land and power, the issue between Russia and Ukraine is a perfect example of that.
