Problem:
The government is able to
monitor and store all emails, phone calls and text messages people sent every
second. According to an article in the Washington Post, about 1.2 billion
emails, phone calls and other types of communication are stored every day. The
worst thing about it, is that the National Security Agency does this without
the people’s authorization or knowledge.
Claim:
Should the government be
able to legally monitor and store all emails, phone calls and text messages without
the people’s consent?
Reason:
I believe that the
government should not be able to monitor and store all emails, phone calls and
text messages people sent out First of all, by doing this, they are violating
everyone’s privacy rights. Second, we don’t know what they can or do with all
of that information. If they want they can use it against us. Third, I believe
this violates the first amendment, freedom of speech. Because if they are
monitoring all of our conversations, they can also use those conversations against
us. In our generation, more than 70% of our communication is done thru emails,
text and phone calls. If they are monitoring everything we sent, they are
basically controlling us, and that is not right.
Principle:
Communication should always be private if necessary. As humans, we should be
able to communicate and not worry about other people sniffing around and
getting involves if it does not concern them. If the government is allowed to
continue monitoring and storing all of our communications, they have so much
power over the population. They are breaking the same privacy laws and amendments
that they put together to protect us, so if the population is having their
privacy rights been violated by their own government, they can’t trust anyone.
